Quest for burritos

Attorney reaches goal of eating 150 Chipotle burritos in a year

By KIMBERLY SWEET

Special to The Star

Just days into 2004, [Burritoman], an attorney with the law firm Shook, Hardy and Bacon in Overland Park, found himself eating his fourth Chipotle burrito of the year.

As [Burritoman] and his friends walked back to the law firm that day after lunch, they pondered just how many burritos [Burritoman] would down that year.

“Someone laughed and said I should make it my New Year's resolution to eat as many burritos as I could,” [Burritoman] said.

[Burritoman], who is single, said he's been a big Chipotle fan since he started at the law firm six years ago. The College Boulevard location is just a five-minute walk from the Overland Park office. He will often forgo cooking in favor of eating a burrito,

The joke quickly became serious. [Burritoman] set his goal: He would eat 150 burritos by 2005. And he would create a blog — or Web log — documenting every burrito-eating experience, from one to 150. The blog includes his evaluation of every burrito as well as poems and political commentary. Rants and raves about the customer service are also included.

On a recent Tuesday, [Burritoman] downed burrito number 150 with his friends by his side. He ended the year at 153.

“There's something quintessentially dorky about it,” [Burritoman] admitted about the New Year's resolution. He said his quest became the running joke around the office.

[Burritoman's friend], also an attorney with Shook Hardy and Bacon, said [Burritoman] was the perfect person to complete the quest.

“He's good-natured and has an iron gut,” he said.

[Burritoman]'s site garnered the attention of at least a few fellow burrito lovers. And his efforts didn't go unnoticed by the corporate folks at Chipotle. The restaurant proclaimed him an MBA, or Master Burrito Ambassador.

Despite being the butt of some jokes at the office, [Burritoman] said the quest did have a larger purpose than just eating a lot of burritos. It gave him and his colleagues an excuse to go out for lunch.

“There's something to be said for breaking bread with someone else,” [Burritoman] said. “Maybe breaking the burrito has the same effect."

While his colleagues have tried to convince him to set another food goal for 2005, [Burritoman] said that isn't in the cards.

“This year's New year's resolution will be nonfood related and more in the spirit of what it's supposed to be,” he said.

also, here's a shout-out (is that word hyphenated?) to my readers in the UK, Canada, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the Australian Ministry of Defense.

December 31: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

one more, just for 2004's sake.

BURRITO COUNT: 153
BURRITOS REMAINING: -3
DAYS REMAINING IN 2004: 0
ON TRACK TO EAT: um, 153?
