October 25: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

ate lunch today with Sarah P., fellow Master Burrito Ambassador. Sarah is a 1L at Kansas and is being mentored (is that a verb?) by Toby C., a fellow burrito afficionado. Sarah loves Chipotle so much that they catered her wedding. now that's devotion.

Sarah has an interesting way of eating her burrito. she unfolds it, eats a little, stirs it around, and then rewraps it -- ensuring a nice mixture of goodies.

today's steak was absolutely outstanding -- extremely juicy and very spicy -- leading me to declare today's burrito one of the top 20 of all time.

also, Toby confirmed today that they've changed their hot salsa recipe. i had noticed last week that it tasted slightly different -- it's a little more tomato-y, i think. still like it.

absolutely outstanding article by George Will about what it means to be disenfranchised and why that word, as it is currently used in the media, does not describe people who can't quite figure out how to vote properly.

here is a very interesting (and long) article from an Englishwoman who is also a U.S. citizen. she's a lifelong Labour Party voter in the UK but she's voting for Bush this fall, now that she lives here in the states. she explains it well and i like her tone and approach.

don't know if you've seen this transcript of Comedy Central's Jon Stewart ripping the guys on Crossfire to shreds yet, but it's worth a read. Stewart appears about a third of the way down the page, and it's hysterical.

October 18: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

in our last episode, i said, "there is something about a spicy burrito on a cold day that gives me a warm feeling the cockles of my heart. maybe it's below the cockles, in the sub-cockle area," and asked anyone who got the reference to e-mail me.

i had a number of responses, including two from people who apparently found this site at random and others from friends and friends of friends. the best, though, was clearly burritofan Greg Y.'s:

From Merriam-Webster's on-line dictionary:

Main Entry: cockles of the heart
Etymology: perhaps from cockle : the core of one's being -- usually used in the phrase warm the cockles of the heart

Main Entry: cockle
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English cokille, from Middle French coquille shell, modification of Latin conchylia, plural of conchylium, from Greek konchylion, from conch 1: any of various chiefly marine bivalve mollusks (family Cardiidae) having a shell with convex radially ribbed valves; especially : a common edible European bivalve (Cerastoderma edule syn. Cardium edule)

Since this particular mollusk apparently resembles a heart (notice the "cardia" Latin root words, above), I think saying "the cockles of my heart" is redundant, but I'm not about to take on the fine folks from Merriam-Webster.

"Sub-cockle area"?? I think you're ripping off an old Dennis Leary bit, my friend.

indeed i was! nicely caught.

in the meantime, i got a shoutout from a local burrito artisan at a different branch (which he calls "The Motherstore of Kansas"). thanks, Aaron.

today's chips were stale. in fact, they have been the last couple trips to my burrito Mecca. what gives? (on the plus side, today's chips were very salty.)

there is something about a spicy burrito on a cold day that gives me a warm feeling the cockles of my heart. maybe it's below the cockles, in the sub-cockle area. who knows.

that's no misprint -- that's two burritos. i was hungry.

the chicken today was outstanding -- spicy, hot, and juicy. add to that a pile of steaming rice and the hot salsa managed to seep into every corner of my burritos. wonderful experience; can't wait for another.

what's burritoman to do when he has a cold that has filled his sinuses with lead weights (or so it feels)? why, eat a burrito, of course. they're full of Vitamin C.

there are 80 days left in 2004. i have 36 burritos left to eat. i'm not a math major, but by my count, that's roughly 1 burrito every 2.22 days. bring it on...

in honor of my recent trip, i asked for a goat (mbuzi in Kiswahili) burrito today, but they said they were fresh out. Kenyans consider chicken a delicacy -- after all, it isn't every day that you kill an animal who offers fresh food to you on a daily basis!

by the way, expect a darn-near daily burrito from me as i hurry to catch up on my pace. even if i eat one every day this week, i'm still on pace only to eat 148 or so. i am hoping to be back on my way by Halloween -- which is only appropriate, as my burrito fixation is simply scary.

burritoman is back from two weeks in Kenya and South Africa. ate lots of roasted goat but no burritos. (turns out there are no Chipotles in Africa!) as a result, i'm behind. but not to worry: Chipotle asara kama simba. ("Chipotle makes me like a lion.") i will pick it up quickly over the next two weeks.
