and it's Friday, so no meat again today.

February 27: extra rice, fajita vegetables, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

without the meat, i have to redouble my efforts to spice up the burrito. i again used both hot salsa (delivered by means of salty chip) and smoked chipotle Tabasco® sauce (delivered by bottle) liberally. worked nicely.

i noticed today as the New Burrito Maker was making our burritos that he lays the meat, rice, and beans down in neat stripes. it's kind of like Neopolitan ice cream, only... well, there's no pink, and it's not made of dairy products. but you know what i'm saying.

in the meantime, thanks to the misdeeds of Ron B., Matt W., and Jerrod W. (again, guilty by association), burritoman's secret identity has been revealed. (it's a good thing i've given up swearing for Lent, or i'd unleash a barrage on those guys.) management now knows who i am and apparently enjoys the blog enough to consider forwarding to their area manager. unfortunately, i now feel a bit bad that i came down so hard on the Slow Burrito Maker (but seriously, the guy took forever... i mean, how can you not talk about this?).

one benefit to my new lack of anonymity: the manager bought us all burritos and chips today. thanks!

at last, i get to eat meat today:

February 26: chicken, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

the chicken just looked too good today to share space with the steak. i used a combination of hot salsa and smoked chipotle Tabasco® sauce to liven up the party. tremendous burrito, one that i was glad to eat. and the chips were great -- very salty. whoever decided to up the salt content, thank you. (as an American, i don't get enough salt in my diet otherwise.) overall, great experience.

another bonus: there is a new burrito maker at the front end of the line and he is great. he is quick, efficient, and generous with the meat. here's to you, Mr. New Burrito Maker.

yet another bonus: Toby C. bought today's burrito and chips, so Burritoman ate free. thanks, Toby.

today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. (i considered giving up Chipotle burritos but decided i would give up swearing instead.) as a result, no meat for me today at dinner:

February 25: extra rice, fajita vegetables, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

at last, salty chips! they made up for the meat that i desperately wanted but was unable to eat. i also drank a cold Miller Lite (again, for any of my bosses reading this message, it was dinner).

apparently Ron B., Matt W., and perhaps Jerrod W. (who may not have participated in the event but was present and therefore guilty by association) have dimed me out to the Cute Manager. as a result, i expect the restraining order to arrive at any time. moreover, Matt W. suggests she was wearing a wedding ring, which means several things, all of them bad (i.e. "thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife"). consequently i shall never refer to the Cute Manager again and may dress in sackcloth and ashes to punish myself.

February 24: chicken, rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

today's chicken was absolutely outstanding. it was a strong performance; the juices from the chicken soaked through the rice to the point where hardly any additional hot salsa was required to flavor the burrito.

the chips continue to disappoint. now, mind you, they're still very good; but i expect only the best from Chipotle. they're just not that salty these days, and i think some quick corrective action is required.

oh, and the Cute Manager looked especially good today, by the way. (no, i am not stalking her. i'm just saying.)

February 21: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

today's burrito was kind of small. i'm tempted to call it a demi-burrito but i figure i don't have much control over how big or small they make it, aside from asking politely for more. the chips were nicely, if unevenly, salted, though.

in the meantime, Toby C. (who, along with Matt W., accompanied me on my burrito outing today) sent me the link to this site. Mr. Ruck is apparently trying to get a burrito stand by winning an Ironman Triathlon. not sure how the two are connected, but it's an interesting read anyway -- even if it has little to do with the nectar of life that is the Chipotle burrito.

February 20: chicken, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

one of the keys to deciding what kind of meat you want is to look at it. i know this sounds awfully obvious, but some days certain choices just look good. today, i decided on the chicken, and it was a wise move. it was very juicy -- in fact, it was so juicy that it combined with the hot salsa to burst through one side of the burrito and drip into the foil wrapper. unbelievably good today.

the chips remain undersalted.

the Slow Burrito Maker was working the register, and doing it fairly well at that. the Cute Manager was cutting up meat in the back and she looked pretty darn proficient at it.

February 18: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

today's burrito was excellent; the hot salsa permeated through the rice nicely. this may have had something to do with my habit of shaking the burrito vigorously before eating; but who knows. unfortunately, the chips were hardly salted, which was disappointing.

the Slow Burrito Maker has improved rapidly. in fact, there was a whole phalanx of workers today -- more than i have ever seen at a Chipotle at any one time. pretty amazing.

Presidents' Day or not, i am hard at work. Scott N. and i trotted over to get a burrito today. remarkably crowded -- we had to share a table!

February 16: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

the burrito was wonderful today. the meat was cooked perfectly, and the hot salsa was just the right consistency. the chips were less salty than usual, but still good.

the Slow Burrito Maker was working the register, which he was very capable of doing. perhaps he should be there permanently. the Cute Manager was present in the background only.

i would like to point out that with today's burrito, i am one-sixth of the way toward my goal of 150 burritos in 2004.

someone asked me what i was on pace to eat in the way of burritos this year. i did the math (burritos eaten divided by number of days so far in 2004, then multiplied by 366) and have projected that at the current pace, i will eat 190.96 burritos before 2004 is out.

i had to go to work again today, so i thought i'd swing by and get a burrito to go. had a nice conversation with the Cute Manager at the register. she was surprised to see me on a Sunday.

February 15: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

this seems like a good opportunity to explain how i eat a burrito. (i am eating the burrito and typing between bites.)

first, i unwrap the foil from one end of the burrito and take a bite from one corner. it's mostly rice; the meat must be on the other side.

the chips are nicely salted. i scoop a bit of hot salsa onto one, then carefully apply it to the top of the burrito where i just took a bite. i let the salsa seep in a bit, then bite there again. then i take a sip of water and eat a chip without salsa.

i turn the burrito and take a bite from the other corner. it's mostly meat and salsa, and it's great. no need to add any salsa to this side.

this process generally continues until the end of the burrito (which always, always comes too soon). the bottom fifth of the burrito is my favorite. the juices and salsa have combined in a pool in the bottom to make a salty, spicy mess, and i love every bite of it.

this is my fourth burrito in five days. it comes after an argument before the Kansas Court of Appeals during which my mouth was running dry and the pitcher of water at my table was empty. so i started thinking about a spicy burrito and it made my mouth water enough to get me through rebuttal.

February 13: chicken, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

the burrito was excellent as always, but the chips were simply magnificent today. they were very salty on the whole -- just as i like them. the hot salsa was a bit watery, but that was fine by me as it allowed the extra salsa to permeate through the rice as i dolloped it onto the burrito with a chip.

the Slow Burrito Maker is improving his process. the Fast Cashier was working the guacamole and wrapping today. the Cute Manager was nowhere in sight.

February 11: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

standard burrito (which, of course, means it was good). the assembly line was packed today, and the Fast Cashier was present but, for some reason, not cashiering. the Cute Manager was nowhere to be seen.

the chips were nicely, if unevenly, salted today -- i had to root around like a truffle pig to find the saltiest ones and then resigned myself to eating the rest afterward.

Saturday is Valentine's Day. there was some discussion as what the other people at the table were doing to celebrate; as i am recently singled, i am planning to go out with a few other single guys and generally avoid the issue of women entirely. perhaps i'll eat a burrito that night.

February 10: steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

alas, the Slow Burrito Maker was working the front of the line again, so it was slow going to the cashier. the wait did give me the chance to talk with Jerrod W., fellow burrito addict. and at least the Cute Manager was there to say hi at the end of it all, which was nice.

one of the things we discussed was my dislike for beans. i recognize other people like them; but they're just not for me. i can't explain why i find them so distasteful; i don't even like the sight of them, much less the taste of their stanky juices.

for a minor change of pace, i decided to get all steak today as it looked particularly tender. and i was right. the chips were light and dry but needed more salt. otherwise, today's burrito was excellent on all fronts.

February 9: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

there was a new, all-female lineup running the assembling line today. the Cute Manager was scooping the salsa, and a new woman was getting drink orders. very efficient. it was like that movie about the all-female gang of bank robbers, "Set It Off" (a remake of a French film, by the way). or maybe i'm thinking of the rock band in "Josie & the Pussycats." (the cartoon, not the movie.) whatever. they were like the Chipotle Globetrotters, only shorter.

actually, wouldn't it be great if i walked into Chipotle one day and found the burrito artisans were tossing burritos and ladles around like bottles and glasses from the movie "Cocktail"?

back to reality ... the chips were good enough today that our table went back and ordered a second helping. the second batch was better than the first -- very warm and very salty. of course, Heidi S. and Jerrod W. are implacable devourers of chips. they, like me, enjoy the salty and limey taste of the Chipotle chip.

twenty burritos eaten in forty days. that's quite a few. i'm currently on track to eat 183 burritos this year.

February 7: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, Pacifico cerveza (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

a few of us were working on this sunny but bitterly cold Saturday, so we decided to break for a burrito, thinking we would eat a quick bite and hurry back to the office.

if only we had known. this was by far the most crowded i have ever seen Chipotle on a weekend. the soda fountain had broken, so the Fast Cashier was distracted dealing with customers who couldn't get their Diet Coke and the repairman. and any speed he brought to the table was negated by the Slow Burrito Maker, who kept the line moving at a snail's pace as usual. on the plus side, he was generous with the steak today. (the Cute Manager was nowhere to be seen.)

on the plus side, the burrito was pretty spicy today -- just salty enough. and the beer added a little something to the experience, something we normally don't have the benefit of enjoying during the week.

on the minus side, Scott N. was wearing his camoflauged coveralls because he can't find his heavy parka. (it's 14 degrees out.) it was pretty funny; he got some strange looks from people.

people are talking about starting a pool on how long it will take the employees at the College Boulevard store to recognize that i am the Burritoman.

February 5: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa, chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

the snow has been coming down most of the day, so we expected a small crowd at Chipotle. not so! instead, it was so crowded that there were no open tables. none. a few of us ate at the bar by the window; others waited for a table.

the burrito was average. not that average is a bad thing; compared to most foods, the average Chipotle burrito blows them all away. but the burrito just wasn't great. instead, it was, as usual, good. the chips were very unsalty today.

the Cute Manager was eating at a booth with a couple of people. that was the first time i've ever seen her away from the counter.

(are we taking bets on how long until the Cute Manager gets tired of being called that and gets a restraining order against Burritoman?)

February 4: chicken, extra rice, hot salsa, and "special sauce" (see below) (91st & Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas)

i picked up a burrito on the way home from work and was met with a pleasant surprise: the Fast Cashier now works at the 91st & Metcalf location. it was nice to see him again. but it's too bad that he won't be working at our local branch, where we really need his skills at the lunch hour.

i was unpleasantly surprised to see that Chipotle has raised its prices. but i can't complain too much -- an extra $0.25 is hardly a steep price to pay for burrito-y goodness.

as i was in line last night, i saw that they were out of steak and waiting for more to be made. so i ordered chicken, then asked the burrito preparer to pour the steak juice that had pooled in the bottom of the pan onto my burrito. it made for one of the best burritos i have ever had in my life, without question. i'm salivating again just thinking about it.

one of the things i like so much about going to Chipotle is that i tend to do it with my friends from work. we arrange a time to meet in the lobby and head out as a group -- maybe two or three of us, maybe ten or twelve. sometimes we walk there, if it's a nice day, but usually we drive. we sit down at a big table (one plus: Chipotle has lots of big tables) and chow down on our burritos as we talk about whatever happens to be on our minds that day.

today it was just me, Matt E., and Chelsi H. we talked about a whole range of things -- workloads, the Super Bowl, Janet Jackson's, um, "stuff" popping out at halftime -- you name it. nothing earth-shattering, but it was lots of fun nonetheless.

what is it about sitting down to eat with people that creates such a bond? i'm sure sociologists have studied it before; but the act of breaking bread has great symbolic meaning. whether it's a dinner date, a family meal, or the Last Supper, it seems to me that sharing a meal with someone can have some powerful effects on people and their relationships.

February 2: 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, extra rice, hot salsa; chips (College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas)

the burrito was, as usual, good. not remarkable; but hardly objectionable. the chips today were a little oily, which was surprising; this is rarely a problem. but they were also pleasantly salty, which was great. the hot salsa was a bit runny, but i didn't mind as i wasn't in a hot salsa kind of mood today. i spent a lot of time eating the chips dry and savoring the salt.
